Junior Cafe Scientifique
November 19, 2016 @ 09:30 - 11:00
FreeJoseph D. Paulsen, PhD, an assistant professor of physics in Syracuse University’s College of Arts and Sciences, will lead a discussion aimed at middle school students about the physics of fluids from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at the MOST, 500 S. Franklin St., Syracuse.
“What if you could see the world around you 5,000 times slower, so that a second lasted more than an hour?” Paulsen asked. “Using high-speed cameras that record up to 1,000,000 photos per second, we can ‘slow down’ time as we watch the splashing of a raindrop in a puddle, or the joining of oil droplets at the surface of a bowl of soup. These images are not only beautiful, but also allow us to better understand the physics of fluids.”
Junior Café Scientifique is sponsored by the Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY), and usually held on the third Saturday of the month during the school year at the MOST. A light breakfast is provided. Participants must be accompanied by an adult. The event is free, but TACNY asks that you RSVP to jrcafe@tacny.org. After the event, participants are welcome to explore the museum at half-price: $6 for adults and $5 for children 2-11.
