Junior Cafe Scientifique
October 15, 2016 @ 09:30 - 11:00
FreeScott D. Reynolds, of M/E Engineering, and Robert Morris, a partner at R.H. Morris and Associates, will lead a discussion aimed at middle school students about computational fluid dynamics and how they relate to the CNY Steamboat Challenge from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the MOST, 500 S. Franklin St., Syracuse.
Computational fluid dynamics is one of the most advanced disciplines of engineering and can be applied to almost anything to improve how the technology operates. The speakers will use pictures and animations to illustrate fluid dynamics modeling of problems like the gas expansion of steam engines and rocket engines, designing greener and cleaner buildings, building more sterile operating rooms and drug manufacturing facilities, and even the path of wind around buildings.
The event is combined with the second annual Central New York Steamboat Challenge, which will also take place at the MOST that day. Attendees do not have to participate in the Steamboat challenge to attend junior café, but they are invited to watch the steamboat races. For more information and to register for CNY Steamboat Challenge, link to the webpage of event organizer ASHRAE’s (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc.) local chapter.
Junior Café Scientifique is sponsored by the Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY), and usually held on the third Saturday of the month during the school year at the MOST. A light breakfast is provided. Participants must be accompanied by an adult. The event is free, but TACNY asks that you RSVP to jrcafe@tacny.org. After the event, participants are welcome to watch the CNY Steamboat Challenge and explore the museum for free.
