Illustrated Poem Contest Winners 2015
The American Chemical Society has sponsored an Illustrated Poem Contest for the past twelve years celebrating Earth Day through an incredible interdisciplinary project incorporating art, English and science. This year, the Central New York Section had 405 poems submitted for the Chemists Celebrate Earth Day Illustrated Poem Contest 2015 with the theme “Climate Science—More Than Just A Weather Report!” from the following schools and school districts:
Auburn, Bishop Ludden, Baldwinsville, Bridgeport, Cazenovia, Cicero North Syracuse, East Syracuse Minoa, Jamesville-Dewitt, Fabius-Pompey, Fayetteville-Manlius, Liverpool, Onondaga Central, Pembroke, Red Creek, Syracuse Hebrew Day School, and Westhill.
The winners of the Chemists Celebrate Earth Day Illustrated Poem Contest for the Central New York Section of the American Chemical Society are:
Kindergarten-2nd Grade Division: Madison Musso, a second grader from Genesee Elementary School, Auburn, NY. Madison’s teacher is Rhonda Altman.
3rd-5th Grade Division: Kiru Morrissette, a fifth grader from Syracuse Hebrew Day School, Dewitt, NY. Kiru’s teacher is Melissa Neri.
6th-8th Grade Division: Alyssa Barnaba, an 8th grader from Theodore Durgee Jr. High School, Baldwinsville, NY. Alyssa’s teacher is Jill Gravante.
9th-12th Grade Division: Katherine Babcock, a 12th grader from East Syracuse Minoa Central High School. Katherine’s teacher is Nancy Dafoe.
Earth Day Clean Up Otisco Lake April 25, 2015
The CNY Section of American Chemical Society in partnership with the Otisco Lake Preservation Association (OLPA), Cornell Cooperative Extension, Otisco Lake Community Association, and Amberations is hosting its 3rd annual Earth Day Event. We will be meeting at the Amber Community Center at 9:30am where stream ecology will be discussed before sampling a stream for aquatic organisms and cleaning up trash and debris along Otisco Valley Road. Refreshments will be served following the event.
The Amber Community Center is located at 2223 Amber Road, across from the Amber Firehouse near the intersection of Amber Road with Otisco Valley Road.
Directions from Syracuse:
Rt 81 South to the Lafayette Exit
Left on Route 20W toward Skaneateles
Left onto Amber Road at the flashing yellow light in Navarino
Follow Amber Road almost to the end, the Community Center is on the right.
